Featured in Half in the Bag: Top 10 Horror Movies (2024) Part 1 (2024). I recently rented the Spanish thriller The Coffee Table (2022) on Prime. The plot follows a couple who have recently become parents and are learning to work together. One day, the husband is left home alone to take care of the newborn while the wife goes out and returns home with guests for dinner. The husband has an accident and the night takes a turn for the worse. This film was directed by Caye Casas (Asylum: Twisted Horror and Fantasy Tales) and stars David Pareja (Amigo), Estefanía de los Santos (Unit 7), Claudia Riera (Black Snow), and Josep Maria Riera (Asylum: Twisted Horror and Fantasy Tales). The premise of this film is wild and thrilling. The events unfold quickly and you are left squirming the entire time, trying to imagine how someone could possibly deal with such a situation. The acting is excellent and captures the situation perfectly. The settings and atmosphere are tense and creepy, with a constant sense of an “elephant in the room” that only one character and the audience know about. When the reveal happens, it is mind-blowing. In short, The Coffee Table is a unique horror/thriller that is well written and even better executed. It is a slow burn, but brilliant and tragic journey. I would rate it 8/10 and highly recommend it.
