Graham Norton in the movie Guest: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024)
Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea she has a secret identity. When her lover falls victim to the dangerous London Underground, Helen finds herself in the crosshairs of her employer, and Sam is called in to protect her. Spoilers ahead.
Meet Helen Dawson (Keira Knightley), a stay-at-home mother of two married to a politician, right?
Wrong, she was actually a spy just before she met the politician and is passing national secrets to the spy organization The Black Doves, who have been selling them to the highest bidder for years. Unfortunately for Helen’s boss, Helen has had an affair, and when Helen’s new lover is killed, she sets out on a mission of revenge to find his killer. During her mission, Helen soon learns that her lover’s murder may be connected to the death of the Chinese ambassador.
It’s these great action scenes that really kept me engaged throughout the series
She also gets involved in a lot of shootouts (which reminded me of Shoot ’em Up and John Wick), hand-to-hand combat (which showed that she’s definitely not a damsel in distress), and explosive escapes (which will help you get hooked). And I didn’t even get bored during the flashbacks showing how Helen first started spying, because even those scenes had some good shootouts. I also really enjoyed the witty one-liners that both Helen and her spy partner Sam (Ben Whishaw) deliver so well.
For example, after an explosive escape, Helen dislocates her shoulder and has to straighten it by slamming her hand into a wall
After that, Sam says, “That was pretty impressive,” and Helen says, “You should have seen me push two people out of myself in the same afternoon. Although I was never bored and I certainly didn’t feel like it was too long and would have been better as a full-length film. I think the last episode could have been about 10-20 minutes shorter, and I found it a bit too convoluted by the end of the series.
No need to waste time scrolling endlessly – here is the full lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month
I understand that they were trying to make the last episode of season two a bit of a stretch, but I still think they could have done it if they had shortened the series. I also think that Helen’s husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) should have been portrayed as a stronger character in season two, because throughout the series Helen has to go on the run to solve her lover’s murder, but not once does Wallace act as a “when he” suspect at the end of the series, he never confronts her about her secrecy. Despite these minor issues, I would definitely watch the second season, and I would also like to rewatch this series and buy the DVD.
